The Alumnae Association of WCC, together with the staff and students of the college, hosted the annual Food Fair on 8th August, at the college grounds, as a fund-raising event aimed to collect funds for McDougall Memorial Nursery School, which provides free pre-school education and day-care for underprivileged children.

The day began with an opening prayer by the Chapel committee. The Principal, Dr. Lilian I Jasper officially inaugurated the fair and drew the first raffle ticket, marking one of the key highlights of the day. The first set of prizes went to Mridula and Bhavani, adding to the excitement around the raffle draw. More winners were drawn later by members of the Alumnae Association, Faculty, and Senate, from tickets sold well in advance.

The area in front of the Centenary Block was lined with colourful stalls put up by various departments from both the shifts as well as the alumnae. The stalls sold everything from biryani, brownies, and cakes to street-style snacks, handmade jewellery, bookmarks, and creative services like mehndi, photo booths and face painting. The Alumnae Association’s stalls were especially popular, with its brownies, flavoured cakes, chocolate fountain, cotton candy and even saplings.

In addition to food stalls, the Fusion Dance and Western Dance Clubs of WCC delivered captivating performances, while the Senate organised games and photo booths to capture the flavour with fun props and foodie captions. Large groups of students also danced to the music from the Juke Box, adding to the festive atmosphere and making the event even more vibrant.

Alongside the day’s events, Departments also hosted sales of jewellery, accessories, clothes, and books at affordable prices, with the collection contributing to the same fund.

Reflections from the Fair

Sarah Thomas, a third year English student, who baked brownies for the department’s stall said, “It makes me happy to contribute to our department as well as the welfare of the children. All the labour I put in feels worth it.” She described the preparation which included purchasing ingredients, baking in advance, and ensuring the products stayed fresh until the Fair.

Veronica, a final year Chemistry student, reflected on the social impact of the event: “It’s inspiring to see my own classmates working for something big. This kind of energy makes us want to do more.”

Ms. Jelin Rebekah, Faculty of the Department of Psychology and an alumna, remarked, “The alumnae always come up with something creative and new. It gets more vibrant every year.”

Ms Premila Gnaniah, another alumna, expressed how meaningful the event was: “This fair truly reflects the values of our college. We met a former student of the nursery school who is working now - it was heart-warming to see how the school has shaped her life.”
