The Journalism Class of the Department of English, WCC, hosted an enlightening guest lecture titled “Careers and Challenges in Journalism” on 15 September at 10:30 am in Rivett’s Language Lab. The session featured Ms. Sunalini Mathew, Associate Editor at The Hindu, New Delhi, and an alumna of the Department.

Ms. Mathew began by sharing her personal journey as an English student at WCC, explaining how her passion for journalism developed through hands-on experience and exposure. She highlighted the significance of focus, persistence, and self-direction in building a successful career in media, stating, “Planning and chasing one’s own path is what makes all the difference.” She asserted that, “Every choice you make should end up creating an impact.”
Reflecting on the realities of journalism, she spoke about the constant tension between reporters and authorities, emphasizing the need for truth, integrity, and courage. She encouraged students to maintain curiosity and initiative. The speaker also stressed the value of broadening one’s horizons through travel and observation. She encouraged students to embrace diverse experiences, stay open-minded, and confront challenges without fear, noting, “You may not have all the skills, but the first lesson is to have curiosity.”
Ms. Mathew further reflected on varied perceptions in professional spaces and the evolving challenges journalists face today. To engage the audience, she conducted an interactive Q&A session based on the 5Ws and 1H formula, where students eagerly raised questions about challenges faced, essential qualifications, and support systems in journalism.
The session offered practical insights into the profession and motivated students to critically assess their own career paths. Ms. Mathew also shared valuable practical tips for aspiring journalists, emphasizing the importance of building a strong foundation in research, writing, and multimedia skills. She encouraged students to actively seek internships, contribute to college publications, and participate in workshops to gain real-world experience. Highlighting the role of ethics and accountability in journalism, she urged them to balance speed with accuracy and to always verify facts before reporting. Her anecdotes from newsroom experiences illustrated how perseverance, networking, and maintaining a professional attitude can open doors and shape a fulfilling career in the dynamic field of media.

The event concluded with heartfelt gratitude from the Department for Ms. Mathew’s session. Her inspiring words left students deeply motivated to pursue their interests with passion, curiosity, and a commitment to ethical journalism.
