Chemistry Club Inaugurated with insightful Lecture on “Chemistry and Nature”

Inauguration event blends science, awareness and student leadership.

Chennai | July 21, 2025: The Chemistry Department inaugurated its Chemistry Club on July 21, 2025, at Bamford Hall, WCC. To mark the occasion and promote environmental awareness, the event featured a guest lecture titled “Chemistry and Nature,” delivered by Dr. K Pandian, Professor and Head of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Madras.


The programme commenced with an invocation and lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries: Dr. G Cynthia Jemima Swarnavalli (Head of the Chemistry Department), Dr. G Libini (Associate Professor), Dr. C Ramalechume (Associate Professor and Head of PG Department of Chemistry), and guest speaker Dr. K Pandian.

A badge distribution followed, honouring the newly appointed office bearers of the Chemistry Club. Dr. Cynthia welcomed the guest and outlined the club’s mission to host lectures, programmes, events, and training sessions, as well as publish an annual magazine highlighting the department’s achievements. She emphasised the club’s role in uniting students and encouraging idea-sharing.

A memento was presented to Dr. K Pandian, followed by an introduction by Ms Evelyn Christiana (Assistant Professor, PG Department of Chemistry), who highlighted the speaker’s 25 years of expertise in nanotechnology, food safety, and fundamental chemistry. He has mentored many PG students, co-authored over 165 papers, and promoted science through public platforms like Doordarshan Tamil.


In his address, Dr. Pandian shared that it was his second visit to WCC campus and commenced his presentation on the pressing topic of “Chemistry and Nature.” He addressed critical global issues, including pollution, water scarcity, improper waste disposal, food adulteration, resource exhaustion, and environmental threats like forest fires and war.

Dr. Pandian didn't stop at simply outlining challenges. Using a visually rich PowerPoint presentation, he proposed chemistry-based solutions to these pressing global issues. His talk was both engaging and educational, aimed at inspiring students to take responsibility and promote environmental consciousness through the lens of chemistry.


Dr. Pandian concluded his session with a powerful reminder:

“We have to save Earth and that starts with reuse and recycle.”

The programme concluded at 11:30 am with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. C Ramalechume. She expressed her gratitude to the Principal, the Speaker, the Head of the Chemistry department, and the office bearers and coordinators who made the event a resounding success.
