Jessica Olivia J M, III BA English
The Department of History, WCC, organised a celebration of Madras Day on 20th August,
the 386th anniversary of the city, to remember and appreciate the history of Madras, now Chennai, through traditional foods and games. Home to the historical Doveton House, WCC has long been part of Chennai’s rich history and heritage. The celebration included friendly competitions in traditional games like Pallanguzhi, Lemon and spoon, Poo kattuthal, and Tug of war. A culinary spread of food was also set up in front of Science Block to give students a taste of the cultural legacy of Madras.

Feedback:
“Madras Day celebrations were far better than what we planned. The interaction with the students was more interesting than expected. The historical and cultural value enhanced by the students coming together to celebrate, made the event a success.” - Amruthavarshini, III BA History.
“I feel that Madras is neglected for its historicity and heritage. People view it as only a modern, metropolitan city, but there is so much of history to Madras which needs to be brought to the attention of the young generation.”- Ms. Arokiya Anbazhagi, Faculty of the Department of History.
This event was successful in involving students in remembering and celebrating the rich history of Madras.
