Where waves met the shore, Chennai met inclusion. On 10th August, Elliot Beach in Besant Nagar turned into a vibrant hub of solidarity and compassion as Walk Along 3.0 brought together over 1,500 people to advocate for disability inclusion and accessibility. Organised as the third edition of this impactful initiative, the event carried a strong message: Disability is not an inability; it is a different ability.”

The highlight of this year’s edition was the participation of the Minister for Health and Family Welfare of Tamil Nadu, Ma. Subramanian, who walked alongside participants, symbolically sharing their journey. Speaking at the event, the Minister remarked, People with disabilities can walk. People with disabilities can take part in regular activities just like anyone else. And he reflected on the deeper message of the event: “This event makes us realize that for people with disabilities, everything is possible.”

The spirit of equality resonated among the participants as well. Aswathy K, a student participant of II BSc Physics (YI Club) from WCC, echoed this conviction: “Everyone is the same. A person with a disability should not be treated differently. They have different abilities to prove their talents.”

For long-time supporters too, the event marked the progress toward a larger vision. Mr. Nithin, a member of YI Chennai who was a part of the initiative since its first edition, noted,“To make Chennai inclusive, we need to look around and understand a part of their life. By 2028, this should become a standalone event.”

Adding to this vision were college students, who played a special role in energising the atmosphere. They set up game stalls that allowed participants of all ‘abilities’ to engage, interact, and celebrate together. The morning also saw dance performances and talent shows that highlighted the creativity and spirit of inclusivity.

Collaboration stood out as a hallmark of this edition. Ms Shashi, Coordinator at V-Excel Educational Trust, shared insights about their early intervention programs for children with neurological disabilities.“Our aim is to get them to be independent,” Shashi explained. The trust currently supports 13 centres with 30 children, highlighting the need for early and consistent support.

Parents too had their space in this movement, with many expressing gratitude for such initiatives, which not only spread awareness but also gave families hope and community.

The event was alive with a kaleidoscope of vibrant stalls that celebrated creativity, culture, and inclusivity. From dancing with RAACK Academy, painting at the Art Corner, and drumming with the Madras Drum Circle to weaving with Vidya Sagar artisans and playing music with the Dorai Foundation, there was something for everyone. Kolam Therapy added a touch of tradition, and rural folk artists energized the crowd with Paraiyaattam, Karagaattam, and Mayilaattam.

The day, however, didn’t just end with these activities and performances. It also hosted the Chennai Got Talent 6.0 live auditions, giving the crowd an exciting platform to showcase their skills and creativity. Registrations were held on the spot, encouraging spontaneous participation and adding to the buzz of the day.

Volunteers and participants were treated to a hearty breakfast, creating a sense of community and care. To close on a memorable note, certificates were awarded to everyone, acknowledging their involvement and making the day both meaningful and rewarding.

Walk Along 3.0 demonstrated that when communities unite, inclusion becomes a reality, bringing Chennai closer to a future that is both accessible and compassionate.
